Vodafone moves Bombay High Court against reduction in IUC

October 13, 2017

Vodafone India has moved the Bombay High Court against the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAIs) decision to reduce the interconnect usage charge (IUC) from Re 0.14 a minute to Re 0.06 a minute.

In its petition, Vodafone India has claimed that the move is in violation of the TRAI Act and is beyond the regulator's jurisdiction. Vodafone had earlier also challenged the reduction in the IUC from Re 0.20 to Re 0.14, a verdict on which is still pending in the courts.

In September 2017, TRAI had decided to reduce IUC from Re 0.14 a minute to Re 0.06 a minute, effective from October 1, 2017. Further, the regulator has also decided to completely scrap the charge from January 2020.

Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular have also moved the Bombay High Court seeking a stay on the decision.
