DoT orders Karnataka government to align its infrastructure rollout policy with centre’s RoW policy

In a letter dated May 1, 2019, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has stated that the Karnataka government’s proposed regulation for telecom infrastructure roll out is not aligned with the centre’s right of way (RoW) policy notified in November 2016. Therefore, the DoT has ordered the state government to align its infrastructure roll out policy with the RoW policy.

The move comes after incidents of cable cutting by the municipal body have been reported in Bengaluru. Recently, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had ordered to cut down telecom cables laid over the ground, citing them to be non-compliant with existing norms, and has demanded fees from companies to lay them underground.

However, telecom operators had stated that the cables were laid overhead temporarily due to road construction work and they had already paid the fees for laying them underground.

Further, the DoT has requested the state government to conduct workshops to generate awareness about electromagnetic field radiations.
