The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to frame recommendations on fixed line number portability.

The step has been undertaken as ensuring fixed number portability is a part of the government’s National Digital Communications Policy, 2018 that aims to have ‘one nation, one number’.

Fixed-line portability is a facility that allows telecom subscribers to retain their landline number when they change their geographical location or service provider akin to mobile number portability offered on mobile numbers. However, porting a landline number can take longer than the time it takes for mobile number portability at present — 2-4 days due to last-mile copper connectivity issues and the presence of a landline service provider in the area.
