Arun Gupta, Chief Executive Officer and ...
Arun Gupta, chief executive officer and founder, MoMagic Technologies, is a technology veteran turned entrepreneur. He has over 23 years’ experience in areas such as business development, product management and mobile technologies. He began his career in 1993 as an engineer with HCL Limited and later worked with DCM Data Systems and Network Programs. In 1998, he moved to the telecom domain, joining the River Run Software Gr-oup. Later, he moved to MediaTek India, where he worked for around nine years, looking after its South Asian market. He also played a key role in developing the first version of its MMI handset.

Gupta founded MoMagic Technologies in 2011. Over the years, the company has emerged as a key player in the mobile internet and app ecosystem. It also has operations in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China and Indonesia. MoMagic now plans to expand both vertically and horizontally by increasing its scale of operations and venturing into different segments.

According to Gupta, there are three emerging trends in the telecom sector. The first is the growing uptake of 4G services, which Gupta expects will become a mass commodity in the next four to five years. The second is the development of a payments system architecture that will add significantly to the functionality of mobile applications. And there will be consolidation in the mobile application space. “While a customer may use a messaging platform on a daily basis, he may not use a taxi-booking application that frequently. Ultimately, the taxi-booking application will have to be embedded into the messaging application,” he says.

Commenting on the key challenges in the sector, Gupta says that a number of players who have established their businesses in other countries are now looking to enter the Indian market. These players intend to create their own space and may cause disruptive changes.

Gupta describes his management style as controlled and cautious. He says, “I am very cautious in delegating work to my team. However, once I delegate, I give them complete independence to pursue the assignment.”

Gupta has a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science, Indore, and a master’s in computer science from the College of Engineering, Pune. He lives in Faridabad with his parents, his wife and their two sons. In his spare time, he likes watching TV.
